Embarrassing Foreign Language Bloopers 

Shall we start with :

"Ich bin heiss."

 is definitely not the way for a young teenage girl to introduce herself to a roomful of top businessmen.

When I was at a Rotary club meeting in Germany, I began my introduction by telling the roomful of men that I had the hots for them - rather than

"Es ist mir warm" 

I was feeling hot.

or 

How about the time I was corresponding with a new crush and I couldn't understand why he didn't write back.

I thought I wrote:

"When I get blue, I play guitar."

Errr.. perhaps because....

"Wenn ich bin blau ich speile guitar."  

really means

"When I get really really drunk I play guitar." 

I found out I'm in good company.
A friend learning English once went from new neighbour to new neighbour saying:

"We're moving in, can we borrow your devil?" 

They were trying to borrow what we call a dolly - the French call it a diable - a devil.

My Spanish teacher tried to buy batteries when he first arrived in Canada by reading the wrong word on the French -English packaging.
Can you imagine the looks he got asking sales clerks:

"Do you have piles?"
